Manu Biosphere Reserve, Peru

Protecting the Amazon Through Travel and Education

The Manu Biosphere Reserve, Peru is the most biodiverse ecoregion on the planet. The reserve is strategically placed in the buffer zone of Manu directly bordering the national core park. This offers an opportunity to expand its operations and ultimately protect more land in the buffer zone itself, thus offering more of an actual buffer to the national park.

Bio Region

Southwestern Amazon Moist Forests (NT0167)

Threats

Mining, slash and burn agriculture and logging.

Method

Expand the Land under stewardship, buy farmland to the north of the MLC which is heavily disturbed and reforest it. Understand how biodiversity is affected by heavily different disturbance regiments of tropical forests and that is now regenerating tropical forests within a biosphere reserve bordering a national park.

Key Species

Black Faced Spider Monkey (Ateles Chamek), Grey Wholley Monkey (Lagothrix lagothricha cana).

Community

The Crees Foundation for Manu collaborates with Salvacion community members and Mascoitania stakeholders for conservation and sustainable development. 50+ Salvacion women build/maintain biogardens, improving nutrition for children, economic independence, and well-being. They co-lead programs like bird monitoring with local schools and "Teaching the Teachers of the Future", building leadership skills among Mascoitania youth.

Fun Fact

Integration of biohuertos (biogardens) in local schools to teach sustainable agriculture, fostering hands- on learning in nutrition and conservation. Biogardens provide food security and health benefits, enhancing family autonomy and community resilience in Mascoitania's transition zones.
