Roatan Marine Park, Honduras

Inspire, educate, and empower communities and visitors to conserve and protect marine environments for the benefit of all.

The Roatan Marine Park is within the Bay Islands National Marine Park (BINMP), the largest marine protected area in Honduras with approximately 6,500,000,000 m2. The BINMP is part of the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR), the second-largest barrier reef in the world and shared by four countries: Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. Its biodiversity contributes economically to the livelihood and social wellbeing of all of those who live and visit this region.

Threats

Poaching, overfishing, contaminants, under-patrolled, pollutants, tourism.

Method

The aim is to provide support to the marine park to increase patrols of the area, increase the size of the MP, and to provide support for more research and protection, education and outreach.

Key Species

Hawksbill Turtle, Green Sea Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, many species of sharks and reef fish, Whale Sharks, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Tuna.

Community

The Island of Roatan is made up of Garifunas: Native islanders who speak English with a Caribbean lilt, mainland Spanish people: A mix of people from the mainland of Honduras, and expatriates: A large community of homeowners and businesses from the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Central Europe.

Fun Fact

The Garifuna people, who were brought by the British in 1797, have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Their descendants still live in the original settlement of Punta Gorda and keep their heritage alive by continuing to speak the Garifuna language, perform traditional dances, and creating inimitable cultural music.
